En 1994, l'Afrique du Sud organise la coupe du monde de rugby. Nelson Mandela débute son premier mandat en tant que président du pays. Contre l'opinion de ses partisans, il sent dans l'événement sportif la possibilité de créer un sentiment d'union nationale derrière l'équipe des Springboks, symbole durant plusieurs décennies des blancs d'Afrique du Sud , de leur domination et de l'apartheid. C'est le pari, politique et humain, de Nelson Mandela après 27 ans d'emprisonnement, contre la peur réciproque des communautés d'Afrique du Sud qui provoque un climat de tension. Il s'agit de faire vivre la "nation arc-en-ciel".
In 1994 South Africa is preparing for the 1995 Rugby World Cup. Nelson Mandela has just been elected president after having spent 27 years in prison. Contrary to partisan opinion President Mandela believes that through sport he can unite his country. This means supporting the Springboks which has been such a strong symbol of white domination and apartheid for so many years. Nelson Mandela undertakes this political and human challenge in a climate of fear and tension present throughout South Africa. His dream is to create a true « Rainbow Nation ».
